Tips for cashiers

I would like to complain about Woolworths policy regarding allow customers tipping cashiers for excellent service.

I write this review on behalf of my father who has instructed me to please do so on his behalf.

He visited the Woolworths food store at Westville mall on 14 July 2019. He was served by an amazing cashier, Nontobeko. Her friendly disposition and excellent service was much appreciated, and my father offered her a tip for her great service. Nontobeko then advised him that it was Woolworths policy that they are not allowed to accept tips from customers, even though my father willingly offered it to her without her ever asking. He then spoke to the store manager who reiterated this policy. He felt this unfair and hence my review.

We find this policy unfair to staff who excel at what they do. My father was told that Woolworths donates to social responsibility and can use the money for this. However, I don’t think anyone should be told how they should spend their money. If it is a customers wish to tip a cashier, why should we then divert our money to a charity chosen by Woolworths?

If one is given great service, these staff deserve financial recognition from customers. If a customer chooses to tip a cashier, why is it not allowed? This is our money and we should be allowed to spend it as we wish.

I would like to request that Woolworths relook at this policy and allow staff to receive a tip if a customer wants to offer one. I am sure in this economic environment, this gesture will be greatly appreciated by your staff.

I look forward to a concrete response from Woolworths on the above.
