Threatening a pensioner with legal action

My mother, a lady of 70 years who can not drive, is in arrears with R 53 on her Woolworths account. On her own, she has been making arrangements for two weeks now with Headoffice to give her an opportunity until tomorrow the 5th of March (when i will be in Potchefstroom to drive her to Woolworths) to settle the account.

She has been in contact with several different people, and promised that they will make a note on her account. She was later called by someone else and told that no note had been made and that she must make immediate payment. She explained, and was once again assured that they understand and will take the situation into account. Today, she was phoned and told that she has a few hours to pay or legal action will be taken. In fact, she was told that the note has been made, but it will be ignored since she is in arrears. I'd like to point out that she is in arrears with ONE month. Not for several months on end. And it is for a paltry R 53.

I'm appalled at this behavior. I understand being strict with customers, but i feel this is absolutely not acceptable when a conscientious effort is made to resolve the problem.
