ROSES INFESTED WITH ROSE MIDGES

My boyfriend bought me beautiful roses from Woolworths (in Rondebosch) for Valentines day (bought on 12 Feb 2016). The blooms were still closed. (I put them in fresh water with the plant food provided). A day after they opened I noticed that the petals were going black on the edges and some of the blooms did not want to open. Today I woke up and I saw that the entire bouquet was crawling with tiny white bugs and I had to throw them out. I was devastated that my beautiful valentines roses had to be thrown out as I was planning to dry them. I did some research and apparently they are called \rose midges\" and earlier signs are blackening of the petals and buds not opening. I am pretty disappointed that roses bought from Woolworths were infested with these bugs, I definitely expected better quality."
