Refused to exchange item

Went to Woolworths to exchange an item with the original price tag didn't have a slip cause it was a gift,they refused to exchange an item for by the supervisor she said she needs a slip and where I bought the item.They refused to exchange the item saying they have not sold it but they do have it in their stores.
