Food gone bad before expiration date

I bought an expensive salad which hasn’t expired yet according to the best before, but when I opened it, the leafs were slimy and smelt awful. I had to throw the whole salad away. Did not expect this from woolworths since it had such a high standard of fresh food and it’s really expensive.
