Faulty product

I got a pair of slippers as gift. They dont match 100%- cut and material varies. Upon questioning it the reply was: "the onus is on the customer to ensure that whatever item purchased is assessed prior payment." Since I feel there should be quality assessment done before displaying and selling of products and signage placed at p.o.s for cystomers to check faulty goods , this product should be replaced.
