Disappointed in the Decline of Woolworths’ Service and Quality
It saddens me deeply to write this review, as Woolworths has long been regarded as a benchmark for quality and customer service in South Africa. Unfortunately, that reputation no longer holds true.
The once-clear difference that Woolworths proudly claimed has become increasingly difficult to see. Not only has the quality of their clothing declined noticeably—products that once felt premium now feel average at best—but the standard of customer service has deteriorated significantly.
In-store experiences have become frustrating. Staff on the floor and at tills often appear disengaged, disinterested, and, quite frankly, unhappy to be there. Their attitudes are more in line with what customers might expect from other more common retailers who do pride themselves in service excellence. One is left wondering: are staff annoyed simply because a customer has a question or needs assistance?
Unfortunately, the online experience fares no better. I have submitted the same complaint three times regarding a defective Country Road linen set—a premium product I paid a significant amount for. To date, I have received no response, no apology, and not even an acknowledgment. As a last resort, I have escalated the matter to Country Road Australia directly.
This is not an isolated issue. Even staple items like underwear that I have purchased for years now fall short of their previous standards, despite packaging that still promises durability and quality.
It’s truly disappointing to see a brand that once exemplified excellence in South African retail lose its edge. Woolworths used to pride itself on putting the customer first—where service was proactive, warm, and professional. Today, that approach seems lost. The current experience suggests that the customer is no longer a priority, and returning to the store feels less and less worthwhile.
While I acknowledge this may not apply to every store or every employee, the broader trend is undeniable and deeply disheartening.
Woolworths, it’s time to take a hard look at your service ethos and quality assurance—before more loyal customers walk away.
