Covid 19 Infection - Woolworths - Access Park PE - Failure to Inform
Since Covid 19 appeared, the world has changed forever. I have a daughter who's world changed forever just before this event. She had already spent 3 weeks in self-isolation before any of us due to an auto-immune disease. The lockdown and possibilty of infection for her and us is very real and scary. So we move with the utmost caution. I was working away form home in Kzn when the lockdown was announced and proceeded to undergo a personal quarantine period of 18 days at a friend's empty house before walking in my own front door last week. This was for my daughter's well being. Woolworths changed all that. Last Thursday the 16th April 2020, we needed some groceries from town. I made my way to Woolworths at Access Park in Port Elizabeth, waited in the que for entry and did my shopping with all the necessary precautions. At home everything was sanitized, including all the bags, purchased items, car, car keys, credit card and my shoes. That same afternoon a post on my local Whatsapp group alerted us to the fact that a team member of Woolworths at Access Park had been diagnosed with Covid 19 on Wednesday 15 April. The day before. There was no public notification of this event until the next day. The National Spokesperson, of Woolworths I presume, stated that the store was closed for extensive deep cleaning. When did that happen? And what is a deep clean? As far as I know the store was not closed the day before my visit. So it had to be done overnight? That's when the store is closed anyway. So they did not close the store. They just did their precautionary "extensive deep cleaning" and then opened for business the next morning. I, along with all the other shoppers the next day, entered that store without any knowledge of a covid 19 positive infection in that store. There was no public notice outside informing people that the store had experienced an infection and had followed their cleaning procedure overnight. Given the current health status of my daughter I am now outraged at the total lack of responsibility and transparency of Woolworths Retail South Africa, the store management and their National spokesperson. How dare you not notify the public immediately and place a notice at your store entrance. I stood in the cue outside for 25 minutes and did not see any public notice on your windows or doors. You may follow all your procedures for such an event, but at least make us, your paying customers, immediately aware of the situation at any of your facilities. Give us the choice to trust in your "extensive deep cleaning" or not. Some may be prepared to walk in the door of that store and rely on the store sanitizing measures and their own methods for their safety. Knowing that your store had just experienced a covid 19 infection, I would not have taken that risk given my daughter's current status. Just allow us to make our own informed decision. But I guess being open for business and watching the money being spent at your tills is far more important. So "don't tell them until we have to" seems like the Woolworths way. Suffice to say I will no longer be your customer and I can only hope that all your other customers that day, who you intentionally kept uninformed, feel as incensed as i do. It was ********.
