Misleading Competition, Disappointing Service

My husband won a competition through an Instagram post from Cape Town Magazine. The prize was advertised as a beer tasting for two people at Woodstock Brewery, including two tastings per person. Based on the wording of the competition, we reasonably understood this to mean that each participant would receive two tasting boards, resulting in a total of four tasting boards between the two people. On Friday, 7 August 2026, we visited the brewery with friends. The two people participating in the tasting each received a tasting board containing five tasting glasses. When we attempted to order what we believed to be the second tasting board for each participant, we were informed, rather abruptly, that a "tasting" refers to a single 50ml beer sample. We were told that each participant was entitled to only two 50ml tastings and that, because they had already received five 50ml samples each, they had actually received more than what the competition offered. While we appreciate that this may be Woodstock Brewery's interpretation of the prize, the wording of the competition was, in our view, misleading. It was extremely disappointing to drive from Blouberg to Woodstock expecting that each participant would receive two tastings, only to discover that "two tastings" referred to two individual 50ml samples rather than two tasting boards. What made the experience even more disappointing was the way the situation was handled. Both our waitress and the manager were unfriendly and showed little willingness to acknowledge that the competition wording could easily be interpreted differently. Instead, we were simply told that this is how the competition has always been run and that they had never received complaints about it before. We understand that misunderstandings can happen, especially when promotional wording is unclear. However, a little empathy and a more accommodating approach would have gone a long way. Unfortunately, the combination of misleading competition wording and dismissive customer service left us feeling disappointed and with a negative impression of what should have been an enjoyable experience.
