Unjustly handed over to collection attorneys
I was handed over to attorneys for collection by Wonga simply because the debicheck mandate was prematurely suspended. A matter that was communicated to Wonga 2 weeks prior to being handed over. Wonga failed to assist me when I contacted them on 3 different occasions to reinstate the debicheck mandate and as a result I was handed over to collection attorneys.
The debicheck mandate was suspended on the 4th of April. I contacted my bank on the 5th of April to assist with reinstating the mandate. I was instructed to contact Wonga as the bank can not reinstate the order on their behalf. I contacted Wonga on the 5th, 6th and 8th of April via email with communications attached from my bank. I only received a reply from Wonga on the 14th of April via email for a matter totally unrelated to my request, stating that it has been resolved. On the 21st of April I was informed that I was being handed over to their collection attorneys. After speaking to 3 different consultants and 2 managers my matter was still not resolved, after the 72 business hours I was asked to give them to escalate and resolve the matter.
The attorneys was dumbstruck as to why I was being handed over as the matter was "easily rectifiable" by simply reinstating the debicheck mandate, as I was not in arrears. After being given the run-around I was left to come to an agreement with the attorneys to rather do manual payments directly to them, as I can no longer trust Wonga. I am still uncertain if the payments will be allocated on time and to whether my credit record will be negatively impacted by this, but I intend to take matters further if that is the case, as I have proof of communications and my account being in good standing.
My take away is: Wonga is negligent. They failed to assist a client when contacted with an issue that could have easily been resolved within minutes and because of their negligence my credentials are now at stake.

Seen as you have been of no help or use the past two+ weeks I regretfully will not be providing you with any details. I have been co-operating, providing details, requesting services and trying to find a solution for weeks only to be met with "I'm sorry, I will escalate the matter".
I have been patient, trusting that your team will handle, investigate and escalate matters only to be met by emails stating: "Thanks for getting in touch with us. We greatly appreciate your query, which has now been reviewed by our customer care team and has been marked as resolved." without ever being directly contacted by a consultant to resolve the matter.
I am still being contacted by your collection attorneys, after speaking with them on Friday 22 April and earlier today trying to make payment arrangements as you could not assist me with reinstating my debit order, for as furious as I might be, I am a loyal client who wants nothing else but to pay the debt she is responsible for. I honor the agreement between myself and Wonga, the same can not be said for you.

Where was this response from Wonga when I contacted you on 3 different days with the same issue, 15 days prior to being handed over to your attorneys for A SUSPENDED DEBICHECK MANDATE? A mandate you instructed me to have my bank reinstate, which I enquired with my bank only to be instructed by my bank to contact you as they can not reinstate the mandate on your behalf. This communication was attached to the 3 emails sent to you which was not regarded and ignored.
My issue and reason for this review is because, you handed me over to your attorneys without attempting to rectify the problem on my account, a problem that could easily have been rectified within minutes from what I've learned today if the correct process and protocols were followed.
Now I'm stuck with the headache of fixing a problem that could have been resolved on the 5th of April 2022 when I contacted you and requested your service.
I do not require your assistance now, as it has proven futile when requested.

We can confirm that Wonga does not have the ability to re-instate a debit order,
hence the reason your account was handed over to a debt collections agency
to set up a debit order and to arrange a repayment plan.
Unfortunately, we have requested you to confirm your details and we
opted to contact you to explain how our Debi check collection process works
and you confirmed in your last response you do not require any assistance.
Should you have any other complaints, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Kind Regards

I just contacted the attorneys to ensure that my agreement with them to do manual EFT payments on my Wonga Account was instated as I was contacted yesterday afternoon by an attorney still trying to "collect" on my account which is NOT in default.
I was informed by the attorney today that not only have I been handed over for a matter that could have been resolved when I contacted Wonga on the 5th of April without being handed over, but now after I close my account with Wonga, I will be held liable to pay "collection fees" to the attorneys.
Just goes to show how we as consumers get *****ed over by companies who is negligent and fails to comply with their clients when needed.
Again, I would just like to point out:
- My account is NOT in arrears
- I did NOT default on payments
- I contacted Wonga on the 5th, 6th and 8th of April to reinstate the debicheck mandate
- Wonga did not reply to my communications or contact me in regards to getting this matter resolved
- I was handed over for collections on the 20th of April, 15 days after my first communication to Wonga in regards to reinstating the debicheck mandate
For 15 days, after 3 emails sent, and numerous hours on hold, Wonga failed to assist me in reinstating my debicheck mandate and opted to hand me over to collection attorneys, knowing my account is NOT in default.
Due to their negligence I am being pursued as a defaulted client and penalized for their incompetence.

As mentioned in our previous response, Wonga does not have the ability to
re-instate a debit order, hence the reason your account was handed over to a
debt collections agency to set up a debit order and to arrange a repayment plan.
It does not mean you have defaulted on you Wonga loan, but due to your bank
suspending and canceling the pending debit order, your account was flagged and
only our debt collections agency can re-instate a debit order when setting up a repayment plan.
As per the loan agreement you accepted, it stipulates that a debit order is
mandatory when you apply for a loan and due to the debit order being suspended,
the system automatically handed your account to our debt collections agency.
Kind Regards,
The Wonga Team.

After being told by Wonga that Wonga does not have the ability to reinstate the debicheck mandate, Wonga assisted me by reinstating the debicheck mandate! Yes, Wonga, not HTN Attorneys.
After reinstating the debicheck mandate I thought it was the end and that the matter has been resolved, WRONG!
HTN Attorneys proceeded to contact me for two months, they even contacted my minor child, this whilst having my number as it is listed on my account. For two months I received sms messages and emails, claiming that I need to settle my account that was R0.00 in arrears, or contact them to set up a payment arrangement for an account that was not in arrears. This was after I sent them numerous emails with proof that my debicheck mandate was reinstated, as received by the Wonga consultant that assisted me with reinstating the debicheck mandate.
I contacted the same Wonga consultant that assisted me with reinstating my debicheck mandate. He again emailed HTN Attorneys requesting that my account be placed on hold with HTN Attorneys and confirmed that the debicheck mandate was reinstated succesfully and my account paid up to date. This was June 2nd 2022.
I never heard from HTN Attorneys again and figured that the matter has finally been resolved, WRONG AGAIN!
Today, I received my monthly credit report... And as I feared throughout the whole process, my credit rating has been negatively affected as I was listed as:
- In Arrears
- Missed Payment
Take Note:
The debicheck mandate was reinstated in May 2022, as payment was already made to HTN Attorneys for May 2022, to proceed from 1 June 2022. Before the debicheck mandate was reinstated payment for May 2022 was made directly to HTN Attorneys and the payment was relocated to Wonga successfully, and reflected as thus on my account.
My bank account was successfully debited by Wonga on the 1st of June 2022, and again on the 1st of July 2022. Since the initial commencement date of the loan agreement between myself and Wonga, all payments have been made, on time, on my Wonga account. Whether it be by debit order or direct payment to HTN Attorneys. My Wonga statements and bank statements verify this!
So Wonga, please pray tell, how is it that I am now listed with the NCR and Experian as in ARREARS with MISSED payments on my Wonga account if YOUR statements clearly state that I AM NOT IN ARREARS, when I have proof of all payments made to Wonga via debit order and direct eft to HTN Attorneys? And how will Wonga assist me by clearing my name and rectifying my credit score? Or will I be told that: "Wonga does not have the ability"?
