R14.01 (interest) Wonga harrasing me and breaking NCA

Dear Wonga,

I am writing to express my deep disappointment and frustration with the recent handling of my loan account. On the 4th of August 2023, You debited my bank account with a final loan amount of R3256.11, I responded to an email dated 3rd of August, from your attorneys urging me to make a payment. I responded promptly on the 4th of August confirming that the payment had been made.

Despite this, an additional service fee of R69.00 accrued within the same month, resulting in an outstanding amount of R14.01 and a total outstanding amount of R122.85. Following this, I was subjected to an excessive number of phone calls - I counted 50 in total - which is an unreasonable amount of communication for such a small outstanding amount.

On the 17th of August, I received another email demanding payment as well as an acknowledgment of the debt letter. I responded on the same day, urging your team to focus on other outstanding creditors and requested a reprieve until the end of the month. I also made it clear that I would not sign the letter and asked for the phone calls to cease.

Regrettably, the phone calls persisted and on the 22nd of August, I sent another email asking for these calls to stop. Despite this request, they continued, leading me to consider refusing to pay the outstanding R122. On this date, I am now in debt with an amount of “You owe R 191.85 today.” Does Wonga run daily interest?

I will not be using Wonga’s services in the near future. I feel it is important for everyone to be aware that, as indicated by the attached June/July statement, Wonga appears to charge interest twice in one month. This does not align with good accounting principles.

On reviewing my account further I am seeing that you are charging interest on interest which is a violation of the National Credit Act (NCAA).

I am deeply disappointed with this situation because I have always been a diligent payer. This leads me to conclude that:

a) My outstanding debt was paid in full on the 4th of August 2023.

In addition to these issues, the unnecessary threats and incessant phone calls during August 2023 have done significant damage to my credit rating over a mere R14.01.

To avoid further action from my side I am willing to give you 24 hours to rectify your books and send me a statement showing a zero balance.

I hope this matter will be resolved promptly and fairly.

THEY STILL HARRASING ME! I AM HANDING THEM OVER TO THE OMBUTSMAN. I DONT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO.

Dear Wonga Team,

I am writing in response to your email dated 5th October 2023. I have a few queries regarding the details you provided.

Firstly, I would like to know who authorized the debit order from my bank account on the 4th of August 2023. As per my understanding, I made all the payments albeit late, and I was not aware of any additional debit order.

Secondly, I noticed an amount of R14.01 that was not included in the outstanding balance on the 4th of August 2023. Could you please clarify why this amount was not added?

Furthermore, it appears that Wonga is capitalizing on consumers by charging interest on interest, thereby keeping consumers in debt. This is a serious concern as it seems to be a violation of the National Credit Act. Could you please explain why this is happening?

Lastly, the outstanding amount of R260 does not seem to justify the numerous phone calls I have been receiving over the past month. Could you please provide a rationale for this?

I appreciate your assistance in this matter and look forward to your prompt response.

If your accounts department only added the R14.0 1 to the debit order that went off on the 4 August 2023 none of this would have happens and i am convinced that this is a delibrarate tactic that is being used on your other customers.

I am deeply disappointed on how this issue was handled . I feel everyone should be aware of the in-human-manner. I was treated!

Best Regards,

Doraine

Hi Doraine  Thank-you for your feedback.  We have received and allocated your payment of R260.85. Your loan is now settled and closed.  We know it is not easy riding the financial ups and downs of life, and we are here to help; however, we don’t want to cause you to get any into financial difficulty. As a responsible lender we never add amount to the contractual debit order. We will only deduct the agreed amount until your loan is settled.  The debit order that collected from your bank account was the same debit order that was due on the 31 July for your last instalment. We did not create an additional debit order but simply allowed the debit order to track your bank account for a couple of days as explained on your loan agreement.  We are always open to investigate all charge queries coming from our customers and are more than happy to rectify any charging errors we find.  Thanks The Wonga Team
