Complaint - Whitehouse Sales Policy

I bought a beautiful, good quality quilt at Whitehouse (Interior & Linen Retailer) on the Sale. It was a King Size item, as with 2 other duvet covers which I bought from 2 leading retailsers.

When I put it on my bed, it was however much bigger than the other two King Size Duvet Covers that I own. I retunred it to the shop and they said that I cannot return an itme, as it is a sales item. I then looked on the slip, thinking that I am sure I saw that I can get a refund within 21 days if the product is in resealable condition, , but right at the bottom of the slip - the last 8 words it sald that this does not apply to sales items.

The problem is that I only received this "notification" on the receipt after I had already purchased the item - I was never informed of the non refundable policy before purchasing the item, as I will not support any company with such a policy. I am sure this is against the consumer protection act in SA?!

The women which helped me was incredibly rude - I explained that I was not aware of this policy and she said it is probable an extra length King size, which it did not say on the packaging. Another couple came into the shop with the same complaint, that a King size fitted sheet that they had bought was too big for their bed.

There was however nothing in the shop that I could exchange it for (although would have loved a smaller version of the same quilt, it was sold out), When I asked for a refund on a gift card so that I could purchase something at a later date, she simply said I had to choose something in the shop as she could not give me a gift card!! How could this be my only choice with a solid consumer policy in place.

I wrote to White House approx 3 weeks ago with my complaint and have received no response. I wrote to them again last week, asking for a response, but no response to my 2nd request either.
