Webtickets and the Baxter Theatre -- a complaint
I live in Cape Town, where I periodically attend musical and other events at the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch. The Baxter uses Webtickets for its bookings. On Saturday, 18 October 2024, I attempted to book two tickets online with Webtickets for a performance by the Franz Trio at 11h00 on 19 October 2025. I have a Standard Bank account with a credit and a debit card. Normally I use the credit card, and have done so innumerable times with Webtickets and other booking agents. This time I struggled, attempting at least eight or nine times, supplying data for both my credit and and debit cards, over two sessions and spending around half an hour at my computer to do so. Eventually the booking seemed to go through and the screen told me that confirmation was needed. I received an SMS from Standard Bank asking me to confirm that a transaction to the value of R420 was valid. I did so. Normally one then receives a message from Webtickets saying that the booking is confirmed and that tickets can now be printed out. I received no such message about the Franz event or any other. I checked my bank statement and it reflected a debit of R420 with an accompanying reference number. As no tickets whatsoever had arrived I attempted to contact Webtickets. It has a web site but there is no email address or telephone number. There is merely a link to a WhatsApp screen which I found incomprehensible. What kind of organisation that deals with countless numbers of customers does not have a contact email address or phone number? How is it that the Baxter entrusts its bookings to such an organisation? I went to the Baxter on 19 October well in advance of the Franz event and spoke to the staff at the ticket office. I explained exactly what had happened and left the staff on duty (two women) with a printout of my bank statement showing the data about the debit of R420 and the reference number associated with it. I was asked to wait a while and to expect one of the staff from the ticket office to find me. My companion and I went to the coffee bar and we had coffees. Some 20 minutes after my approach to the ticket office one of its staff members came to me and said that they had been in contact with Webtickets and had been told that I had in fact booked for another event, namely the European Film Festival at the ***** Theatre. I had made previous bookings of tickets for that Festival but those events were some time in the past. The staff member was adamant that I had not made a booking for the Franz event and declined to provide me with tickets. I asked to be put through to the manager of the theatre and I was put through to another woman. Unfortunately I did not take here name but I confirmed she was the manager. She repeated the fiction that I had made a booking for the Euroopean Film Festival, not the Franz event at the Baxter. She refused to accept my explanation that this was a fiction. The fact of the matter is that the tickets for the European Film Festival cost R90 per head, and not the R250 and R200 (I am 87 years old and receive a discount of R50) for my desired tickets at the Baxter. Moreover I received no tickets whatsoever from Webtickets after my payment of R420. No multiple of R90 comes to R420. My computer is available to Webtickets or the Baxter management to examine for confimation of the facts set out above. I left the Baxter immediately and and am now short of R420, having had to disappoint both my companion and myself by missing the Franz event. Webticket iss left with R420 which it gained for nothing. I have been attending events at the Baxter for around 40 years, often with parties of people for whom I have paid, and my guess is that I have spent at least R100,000 on Baxter tickets over the years. I need not say how I feel about this affront. Please publish this complaint and if you deem it worthy pass it on the Consumer Council. The one star indicated above is exceedingly generous to WebTickets. I have struggled many times with its 'systems' but only now has the result been as unhappy as this time.
We do apologise for the inconvenience caused.
We have checked the proof of payment that was sent and note that funds of R450 were deducted for 2 different events and no proof of payment was sent for yesterday's transaction, this could possibly be that no funds were deducted. Yesterday we noted that some customers were experiencing some payment issues which were escalated to Iveri and Bankserv. Please further note that our Whatsapp number and e-mail address are available on our website, in future if you do experience the same issue you may contact the Baxter Theatre directly for assistance. Kindly double check that the R420 was not deducted and if it was please provide us proof of payment send this to *** so that we can look into this and assist you accordingly.
We do apologise for the inconvenience caused and would just like to say thank you for all the support over the years.
