cancellation fee problems

I paid a deposit to this guesthouse made resavations and all i had a problem today and had to turn back so now i called to cancel and find out if i had any cancellation fees cause i was not informed about them only to find out that i have forfited my deposit and i must pay the whole price even though i didnt spend the weekend there i am very unhappy about they service
