Are your tortoises okay??

The botanical gardens remains one of my favourite places, but I must report that I had a very sad incident with them this past week. When at the gardens I saw one of their tortoises, it did not look very well and was battling greatly to walk. I made my way to the entrance and asked if someone wouldn't mind having a look at him/her - the security was remarkably uninterested and told me to look for ground staff to assist - which I could find not one. Upon returning to the creature - it was surrounded by children (from a school trip) some wanting to kick it and making loud noises - clearly distressing the animal. After finding a teacher/caretaker and another security guard who finally moved the tortoise out of the way of the children, I was told that both tortoises in the gardens are unwell and upon closer inspection of the creature his/her shell had been wired back together (this may be the way that shells are fixed, I am no conservationist nor vet). The response from the gardens was especially disappointing considering they have just spent millions putting up a Walter Sisulu building but their wildlife is suffering? As I said, I am a patron of the botanical gardens and have been going there for years - I love the place and what they stand for. The tortoises are close to or over 100 years old, I just want to be assured they are receiving the healthcare that they so greatly deserve.
