Moved, but unable to move on
With plenty of experience renting, it is always a preference to deal with an agency, instead of a landlord directly, as the communication and process is more black and white, and generally both parties understand any issues and resolve these through predetermined avenues.
That said, Wakefields has been largely absent from our renting arrangement and we dealt with the landlord directly (not through choice, but necessity) with regards to repairs, electricity and water etc, and highlight this as the main reason for leaving our property.
Firstly, the building inspector (Marc Bester) 'cleared' the house of any and all issues sans the repair of a cupboard which we agreed to, and provided him with the details of a handy man to quote the work. To our frustration, as soon as we vacated, other issues start arising that had not been highlighted before. No exit inspection document was provided to us either.
What was more frustrating is that the inspector failed to arrange the handyman to quote the work, but held the deposit until such time as a quote could be done. Now, we handed the keys to him and agreed he would arrange the quote. One can see how we were in a catch 22 here.
Eventually i contacted the current tenant, and the handyman and arranged a quote. (this was 15 days after we left and outside the terms we signed for in the lease).
Again, i had to contact wakefields to release my deposit, and then, although no surprise, found the deposit short, as well as sans interest agreed to in the lease agreement.
Although i have attempted to unpack why no interest was paid, my emails go unrep**** to, by a certain Kasthurie Naicker, and i can unfortunately not recommend wakefields in good faith based on the above.
