Unpleasant experience with VUM insurance

VUM insurance overcharged my account 2 months in succession

I have joined VUM insurance 1st February 2017. My cover is what is called VUM Pay per Kay Insurance. Meaning the premium gets calculated based on the kms travelled in a month with a minimum of 2500kms. The first premium is calculated on their maximum kms of 4600.

Beginning of my unpleasant experience with VUM insurance.

First month I was charged initial monthly premium for 4****ms plus the so called pro-rata, regardless of the fact that I have stated that the cover should only start 1st February 2017. I had to provide proof of the signed copy of my cover before they could refund the pro-rata charges.

Second month, I was charged the same amount as the initial one regardless of the fact that I have travelled way less than their maximum kilometers, nor their minimum kilometers. I again emailed the guy by the name of Gerard Kroese to explain as to how they have arrived to that figure. His response:

“The inception date of your policy was on 1 February 2017, Your Ctrack device was obviously only activated in the first week of February and not on the 1st of February.

As we don’t have a full month of data available for the month of February (1st – 28th) we use the fleet average of 4****M as stipulated on your policy.

Moving forward, we will have a full month’s data in terms of KM’s travelled for March thus your April premium will be calculated using your KM’s travelled in March 2017.”

I then requested Ctrack to email me the movement report of my car. The report did proof otherwise, it shows that my ignition has been off since 1st February 2017 – meaning that the device was active, hence it could detect that the ignition has been off for 11 days since 1st of February. The only simply reason was because I have not been driving that specific car during that period.

I email Gerard Kroese that report from Ctrack and this was his response:

“ Thanks very much for this. There seems to be a problem with the data Ctrack send to us.

We will look into this and correct it”

Gerard then emailed me what he called a revised amount, which was still the same amount as the one I was querying. I sent him a follow up email to explain himself. His response:

“In your case there is no corrections needed and the data is correct. Your policy incepted on the 1 February and we don’t have a full month’s data from ctrack as the tracker shown data only from the 12th February.

For this month premium we use 4****M as stated on your policy to calculate your premium. For the next month (April) we will have a full months data from ctrack and premium will be based on that data.”

I had to interpret the Ctrack report to Gerard Kroese, explaining the meaning of ignition off.

After a day and half of exchanging emails, Gerard eventually emailed me this:

“ Just to assure you I have already credited your account. You have R 1349.63 credit that will be deducted from your next premium.

Your revised premium on 2500KM is R 1606.74”

As I was writing this, VUM insurance had already debited my account with R2956.37. So guys please read and understand your policy documents and know your rights. Some insurances may take you for a ride if you don’t know and understand the content of your policy document
