Faulty / inferior product?

On two occasions now I had to take the Volkano Lightning Charge & Data Cable back to Cape Union Mart because it stopped working, i.e. connecting to the iPad or iPhone. The store confirmed too that quite a few customers have previously returned these cables. Something seems to be wrong with this series?
