Debit order ****

Before Covid I cancelled my membership and the debi ur order stopped howeved 31 August they debited my account. I reversed this debit order and now 15 September they tried again. How is it legal for companies that you previously gave your bank details for to just continue even though you cancelled. And I had a month to month membership so no contract.
