Unilateral extension of contract after expiry of gixed agreement of 12 months

I had 12 months contract and communicated cancellation with them. They are charging me for the month that fall after expiry of my contract despite having informed them about cancellation. This is greed and opportunism that is aimed at maximizing profits unduly.
