Reckless Financial Practices
I am concerned about reckless financial activities by Virgin Active. My son was given a gym contract without him being full-time employed, or submitting bank statements. He was still at school (Gr12) in 2018 and finished matric in December 2018. He started temporary employment as a waiter during December 2018. He was phoned and asked if he would like to join Virgin Active, and being tempted to do so, he was assisted to apply. The contract was approved. I am not sure how this was done without any financial checks or permanent employment. When he lost his work, he went to Virgin to request the contract to be cancelled in March 2019. He was told that he cannot cancel it, unless he pays a penalty of approximately R3,700.00. Unfortunately he cannot pay it. Then they said he need to pay R600 (R300 x 2) for two months, that will enable the account to be kept on hold for that period. This is also unacceptable. The boy just turned 18 in November 2018, and in December he was made all these promises to sign-up for the contract. I feel this is reckless lending, and surely not in line with proper financial practices. This contract needs to be stopped now. His contract number is ********** 967
