Non existing "Account" handed over to debt collectors

I did not renew my 24 month contract with virgin active after it ended, and 2 years later they have handed "my account" to the debt collectors and I dont understand why since I did not sign any contract with them, I have tried calling their accounts department with no luck, I need someone to explain to me how do I owe them money.
