Non disclosure of cancellation fee %

My husband, myself and my two children, signed up with Virgin Active Century City at the end of February this year. We originally wanted a month to month contract, but was told by the sales person "Pearl' that we had to sign a year contract, but with the option to cancel at anytime at 20 days notice. We then relocated to Malmesbury at the end of June and I called to cancel our contract. I was then told that there is a 40% of the remaining amount owed for the contract cancellation fee is before they will cancel my contract. When I checked my contract there is no mention of any % just a "reasonable cancellation fee" when I emailed to query this the response from Virgin active is that Virgin Active deems 40% a reasonable cancellation fee and that they can't disclose the percentage as it will make the contract too long. I've been trying for 2 months now and they refuse to cancel unless I pay 40%. This is a ridiculous percentage, and Virgin does not disclose it because then no one would sign such a contract, so they are purposefully misleading clients. I've been trying to speak to someone in management but the furthers I get is to about 7 different sales consultants all apologising for the inconvenience but refusing to waiver or even negotiate the 40%? I can't believe that I'm the only one that has been caught out this way. It is disgusting that a company feels that failure to disclose all info on a contract is ethical and making a person pay 40% for a service they are no longer using is even more ridiculous. I have relocated there are no Virgin Active Gyms in Malmesbury or surrounding. There must surely be a way to meet a compromise in such situations?

Response from Virgin Active below:

A 40% (R1989) cancellation fee is charged. Your debit order for R829 for the 3 contracts will still be raised on the 1st of August 2017. This debit can be used as part of Cancellation fee, You then have to pay R1160
This fee is payable immediately and will be deducted via EFT.
You may access our club until the 31st of July ********** 7.
I can confirm that the cancellation process is in line with the CPA law.
