Misinformation regarding cancellation of contract

When I entered into the contract, I asked the assistants who helped me fill the contract, whether I could cancel the contract at anytime, he confirmed that I could and now when I re-read my contract it states that the contract is for 1year and I might be liable to pay a cancellation fee that most likely will be too high. Could you please assist me because I would like to terminate the contract with a minimal cancellation fee.
