Fees for under 18s

I have been taking my one-year-old son for a swim at the baby pool about once a week and was told that I need to get a membership card for him, but that his membership would be free (apart from the card fees) if I have been a member since before 2014.

I have been a member at Virgin Active since October 2003 and therefore assumed that I would not have to pay any membership fees for my one-year-old. However, when I went to get his card issued, I was told that membership fees for my baby are indeed due, due to the fact that I had my Virgin Active club membership linked to my Discovery Vitality account on 7 January 2014, and that this therefore counts as a new gym membership contract, which was started after 2014 (namely on the 7th of January).

Having been a gym member for over 12 years, I find it truly ridiculous that the fact that I had the membership linked to Discovery Vitality should now count against me and result in me having to pay membership fees for my baby. This is nitpicking aimed at squeezing the last cent out of loyal members, and I am certainly considering cancelling my membership altogether.
