Difficulty cancelling Virgin Active Gym membership

could not contact virgin to cancel - posted query, no response, eventually got through to consultant today. tried hard to convince me not to cancel, eventually agreed and would not issue a ref#, assuring me he would send an email confirming cancellation. still waiting for this.
