Contract cancelled yet still being debited

When I queried why the debit going through my account was more than expected, I was informed that it was no longer linked to my vitality from Discovery. I contacted my broker and asked him to query it and was told that due to me stopping my medical aid and vitality the previous year that my Virgin reduction from Discovery had fallen away. As I had lost my job the previous year, I had not been able to maintain medical aid payments. Once I had new employment, I reactivated my medical aid and vitality with Discovery. As it was considered a new application, a new medical aid number and vitality number were issued to me. I asked if the vitality that I had previously could be reinstated so that I could still qualify for the reduction on my Virgin Active subscription. Discovery came back to me and said that it was possible however they have been informed by Virgin that the contract had been cancelled in March 2015. I called up Virgin to find out why I was still being debited if the contact has been cancelled and was told that my wife's contract was still in force but that mine was cancelled. I told them that at that point I was unemployed and if I had cancelled the contract, it would have been all the contracts and not just mine. I requested that the debits that had been taken from me from that date be refunded as the contract was cancelled and after sending bank statements was told that they would not repay the debits without any further clarification.

It does not make sense that if I was unemployed that I would cancel just 1 contract and not both as they were being debited to the same account. The fact is that they did not cancel both contracts and have continued to debit my account since. I am of the opinion that Virgin need to repay the money that they took from me, but their regional management have refused.
