Change of debit amount without notification

I cancelled my Discovery Vitality at the end of November when i left my previous employer, after which i contacted the Vitality department to ask if all other services attached to my portfolio would be cancelled.
Vitality informed me that all services would be cancelled.
Low and behold i got debited 01 Jan for a Virgin Active premium super club membership at R800+ which i paid R300 for previously.
What really disturbs me is the communication between these two companies. If Vitality informed Virgin Active of my change in membership for them to change my billing WHY did they not notify me?
No one notified me of the increase!!! Had this been communicated i would have cancelled my contract with Virgin immediately.
The manner in which Virgin does business is extremely ********* and for this reason i have lost faith in the brand and doubt i will return if this is the case.
As a consumer do i not have the right to be notified if you are taking money off my account...this is ridiculous!!
