Cancellation Wars: A Lack of Transparency

I signed up for a membership at Virgin Active Wembley Square a few weeks ago. Today (24 August 2016), I inboxed the club via Facebook to cancel. Then I was told that I would need to pay 40% of my contract fee, amounting to R6650. What's even more fantastic, is I never used the gym ONCE, nor do I plan to again! I was tuned to read the terms and conditions, and realistically no one does. The guy who signed me up did not inform me that it is a one-year contract, and made no mention of cancellation FEES. There was no paperwork to go through to read a contract, the salesperson sat in front of a PC and signed me up - no information was given other than what I wouid be paying per month, no information on cancellation, no mention that it would be a one-year deal - nothing!

It's quick SICK that Virgin Active would still have the nerve to charge me close to R7000 to cancel a contract for a gym I have no intention of used and never stepped foot in after signing up initially. Now, R603 will come off my bank card - the money I work hard for - every month even though I make ZERO USE OF YOUR ****** GYM. It's morally ******* and *********. I should not be subject to paying.
