Cancellation of contract

<p>I received an email on the 5th of July 2016 from Virgin Active with regards to the upcoming expiry of my membership contract.</p> <p>In the email, it states that:</p> <p>“If for any reason you don't want your membership to continue on a month-to-month basis after your initial term, please make sure to let us know prior to 31 August 2016.”</p> <p>So today, on the 29th of August 2016, which is PRIOR to the 31st, I phoned Virgin Active to cancel my contract.</p> <p>The consultant informed that my contract stipulates I have to phone 20 days before the end of the month to cancel my contract, otherwise they will have to debit my account for the following month. So they will cancel my contract, but they are still going to deduct the fee for September.</p> <p>I did try to explain to the consultant that the email I received said something else; he said we are at a stalemate and there’s nothing he can do, they are definitely going to deduct the money for September.</p> <p>What upsets me about this is that Virgin Active then should have stated in their email ‘let us know before the 11th of August 2016’ INSTEAD of the 31st of August 2016. I phoned in good faith in accordance with the sent email and did not go double check my contract. I find this behaviour underhanded and dishonest as I am sure that there are many people that would phone before the stated cut-off date in the email and then be penalised for it.</p>
