Blocked Due to Virgin Active’s Faulty Debit Order Process

Extremely disappointed with Virgin Active Durbanville. Our debit order was scheduled for Friday, 1 May 2026, which is a public holiday. Because of this, the debit order quite obviously did not go through on that day. Instead of having a system that understands this very basic banking reality, Virgin Active’s system automatically blocks access as if the member simply “did not pay”. On that Friday, we went to the gym as usual and my daughter’s card was blocked at the entrance, in front of other members. The staff behind the counter immediately stated we were blocked due to an “outstanding payment”, with no effort to actually check or investigate. This was embarrassing and completely unnecessary. After wasting time and pushing for answers, they eventually admitted that the debit order hadn’t gone through because it was a public holiday, and that their system auto-blocks members in these cases.

Let me be very clear: ➡️ This is not a member’s fault. ➡️ Your broken system is not our problem.

What made this even worse is that we had to explain this exact same issue every single day from Friday to Sunday, because the block remained. The staff were unhelpful, offering no real assistance or apology, as if we were somehow at fault for their system failure.

This caused repeated inconvenience, embarrassment, and frustration — all for something entirely outside of our control.

For a gym that charges premium prices, I expect basic competence, respectful staff, and systems that don’t humiliate paying members over a public holiday debit order.

Absolutely unacceptable service. Do better.
