Billed but never signed contract

My experience started in Jan 2014. I was receiving calls almost every day from a VA representative from the Kenilworth branch.

At the time I was considering joining a gym and was exploring my options but not ready to settle, as I was about to start my studies again, the next month and I did not know what my schedule would look like or whether I'd be employed.
I filled out my info, but said that I needed time to think about it and I would return the next day. I did not return, because I did not want the membership, the employees were annoying and forceful and they hounded me to come into the club almost daily. One of them even sent me messages via WhatsApp - which I still have.
Not too long ago I started receiving SMS's when ever there was any activity in my bank account. Soon after I saw that I was being billed by VA for a membership.
I stopped the debit order and now I am getting calls and voice mail messages to say that I have an outstanding balance of more that R1000.

I am livid. I did not even sign a contract or anything of the sort to confirm this gym membership.

I would like a refund. This is truly day light *******.
