VeriCred/Telkom harassment

Received a phone call and three SMSs from Vericred on 15/07/2022. Told me that I owe Telkom R556.51. When I said I don't have a Telkom account, the lady mumbled something and put the phone down. Received another SMS on 18/07/2022: "Still no pmnt on your TELKOM NGN acc...". My telephone numbers were ported to a fibre voice provider in about July 2020 - if Telkom were owed anything, they would not have allowed the porting. The amount is not a big deal but I'm obviously concerned about being blacklisted. Can I lay a charge of harassment?

Hello LEON S******, thank you for your review.
Further to your comments, please note that we did not request Telkom to hand over your account, they handed your overdue account over recently on 13/07/2022 and instructed us to collect the outstanding monies on their behalf, hence the sms's sent. It is thus by no means 'harassment' as you claim for receiveing sms's in this regard as calls made were left unanswered.
Be that as it may, it does not seem that you have queried the issue with them and enquire as to why they would hand your outstanding account over for collection. Please take cognisance that we are investigating your allegations with our client to get clarity in this regard, feedback from them will duly be communicated to you. In the interim a hold was placed on the account.
Thank you.

At least someone (yourselves/Telkom?) could have sent a statement or invoice - I have no idea who you are - could even me a **** syndicate. Using a big name like Telkom is a standard tactic of ******** who try to rush people into parting with their money!

Also, nothing you've said excuses the behaviour of the person who called me - If she had not impolitely ended the call, I could have explained further. Instead, I get SMSs with a suspicious URL which I would never even risk attempting to connect to and also no documentation of the details of the supposedly outstanding amount. Because internet ****s are rife, I would not connect to any URLs or respond to any phone calls or SMSs whose origin I do not know, hence my report to hellopeter.com.

May I also add that, for months (possibly years) before porting my number, the line (both voice & ADSL) was not working and was reported to Telkom several times, but they stopped doing repairs to alleged "cable faults". As far as I can remember I even got a few refunds due to the line problems.

You mention "calls made were left unanswered" - I get many calls per day, many of which are ****s, I do not return missed calls unless I know the caller or a message is left.

in my anger, I mistakenly mentioned three SMSs on Friday - this should be two SMSs on Friday and one yesterday. However, I still believe several SMSs and a phone call in two business days qualifies as "harassment".

Good day LEON S******, our previous comments refer.
Please note that our client's feedback was that the account was handed over in error and requested us to withdraw.
Under the circumstances your account was closed and is no longer with Vericred. Should you have any further enquiries please contact Telkom directly.
Thank you.

Thank you. Perhaps I overreacted somewhat - main reason was the behaviour of the agent who initially called me. If I had been given the opportunity to say something, all subsequent communications may not have been necessary. And in these days where the next scan is just around the corner, the strange URL in the SMS added to my suspicion. Further, the name TELKOM NGN means nothing to me - anyone could open a bank account with that name. Thanks also to the lady who subsequently phoned me - she had to take the brunt of my anger and she handled that pretty well!
