Poorly handled graduation.
Varsity college made the decision to cancel our graduation this year. We understand that this was the correct decision however they have made no plans to give us a proper graduation once this all passes. Today was meant to be our graduation and we have heard absolutely nothing from them. We had to find out via other students that we can access an electronic version of our certificate on our computers. They have had no decency to even let us know themselves. Not even an apology or congratulation on this special day. UP held an online graduation ceremony giving students the correct recognition they deserved with a graduation to be held once the pandemic settles. Varsity college has made no effort to recognize us or even recognize the students who graduated with cum laude. Once you finish your last exam its like you don’t even exist. Varsity college, you have succeeded in making us feel like this was not a very important day and like our degrees are worth nothing. Shocking communication. We worked our butts off and nothing.
Please note that several letters have been sent out regarding graduation, to all graduates.
The IIE’s Varsity College has notified students that graduation cannot be “postponed” as testamurs must be issued and students must graduate. However we have also indicated that we will hold an event for graduates and the exact nature and timing of this event will be communicated following the point where normalcy returns to the societal situation in South Africa. It is impossible to say at this point when that date might be.
Electronic copies of the certificate have now been released, but we have held off communicating until every campus was uploaded and tested. This will be done today and Thursday, and broader communication will go out to graduates on Friday.
We remain highly sensitive to the fact that graduation is a very important milestone event for students. Should you wish to discuss this further, please
