I was accepted just to make money and then later deregister me!

I am supposed to be a first year student in Bcom Economics, I studied my higher certificate at varsity college and now I’m being told they intend to deregister me and I will not be allowed to graduate from my higher certificate. I have already paid my fees for this year and I spent a lot of money on fees last year.

When I app**** for BCom Economics I was told that my high school results from my country were not equivalent to metric and as a result I would have to start with a higher certificate. I assumed this was a way of helping me get to the course so I didn’t mind.

However, I was supposed to apply for SAQA evaluation and I only received my evaluation certificate this year and the institution exercised great patience for my SAQA certificate. I received an NQF level 3 certificate and I was allowed to register then a week later I received a call from a staff member telling my SAQA level was not equivalent and I would be deregistered and not allowed to graduate.

It’s cost my family a lot of money to let me attend this institution and now I’m basically being told I can’t study anymore.

I am very outraged because during my application I was told that I couldn’t get into the degree because my high school results were not equivalent and I could do the higher certificate instead but now I’m being deregistered over it. It’s basically like they accept you without you meeting the qualifications and then they deregister you and make money off of you.

I’ve read their academic policies and it’s explicitly states that campuses should only register students after ensuring they meet the entrance requirements.

I have spoken to a few people on campus and apparently they’ve done this to a number of students before me.

I am currently seeking legal advice on how best to deal with the matter because this is unacceptable and ive investment too much money and time into my studies.

It’s completely made me lose faith in the institution.

Good day, Varsity college Cape Town campus . I would appreciate any help on the matter as right now I cannot attend class and I think it does not make sense that during my application I was told I couldn’t do the degree because my results were O level which is below Matric and I should register for HCBPP so how exactly did they expect my SAQA to be matric equivalent.

Good day, Firstly thank you for your quick response in dealing with the matter. However, nothing is being sorted in my opinion. I am still losing my school place and considering the time of the year there’s noth much I can really do. I have not only lost finances but also a whole year of my life that I’ll never get back. I passed my Higher certificate and feel like for that reason atleast I should be allowed to study or atleast allowed to study while I get the relevant NQF evaluation. I understand that there will be disciplinary action taken against the staff members that advised/registered me but this does not make a difference to me. You are gambling with people’s lives and that’s not correct. According to your academic policies , campuses should ensure students meet the requirements before registering them and considering I couldn’t get into the degree directly because my results were O level how was I expected to get NQF 4? I am completely unimpressed and I do not intend to accept such mismanagement especially from an institution that deals with people’s futures. The main purpose of an application process is to ensure that students meet the requirements and even though they are supposed to apply for SAQA it should be a situation where the institution is able to tell if someone qualifies or not unless you’re telling me all foreign students just get admitted on faith that they’ll receive the correct NQF evaluation.
