Is online shopping always what it seems?
Over the years, I have become accustomed to the reliability and high service levels of online shops. Recently I was searching for sun hats for our upcoming vacation and stumbled across a local online company (in Stellenbosch) that stocked the items I was after. This company have quite a professional and upmarket looking site (Urban Market, aka URBN MRKT). According to the site, they had the items I required in stock. Having secured my order via "PayFast", I received a SMS from the online store a few hours later, claiming that there is a technical problem with their site and that they might not have the items I ordered in stock. I subsequently notified queried this notification, The reply I received from the site owner was that the business is run by a first year student and the availability of stock can thus not be guaranteed due to limited available funds and that the message I received is thus a "standard" response to all orders placed. I was promised that they will verify availability of stock and inform me the next day. I was notified that one of the items on my order (the one I really wanted) was not available and I will be refunded for this item. I explained my situation and requested a full refund (and cancellation of my order), to which the response was that it is absolutely no problem and that my refund will be processed as soon as my payment reflects in his business account. A week later I mailed Neil Van Zyl, requesting an update on my refund. As I received no response on my mail, I followed it up with a telephone call. Neil now informed me that my refund will now only be processed after my payment has been transferred from his business account to his "refund" account (which should be sometime today) . . . . strangely I am starting to wonder if I will see my money again, as the rules seem to be shifted each time I communicate with Neil.
