Unactive policy due to no correspondence for them

I took out my vehicle warranty policy 31 December 2016, they said that the policy will be active 30 days after successful payment, the debit order went through(January), but later returned due to the unknown bank reference "Telesure". I phoned the bank to the the debit order reinstated and the next payment in February was successful. So I assumed that everything was in order, I even phoned in to confirm that everything was in order. Earlier in February I had repairs done to my car and was told that the workshop was not on their panel, even though the only requirements for this policy was that the service history must be up to date and that it must be taken to a RMI approved workshop which it all was. So then I could not submit a claim. Now I had to claim again from them, only now do I get informed that I can't claim because the first debit order was still outstanding. According to the rules, it states that you will be covered 30 days after successful payment was received, which it is now more than the 30 days since the last payment. So I can't claim again.

I do not see how I can not claim now, but I was never informed that I had to pay the first premium to catch it up, otherwise I would have done it. So in other words Unity would have continued taking my debit orders knowing that I am not covered, how is this even ethical. This is absolutely unacceptable and would appreciate Unity's urgent input and compensation in this regard.
