Mistakes made by Unisa.

My experience so far as a first year student at Unisa has been terrible so far. I have had nothing but inconvenience so far.

Here is an update on my emails and activities so far:

During my registration there was a mistake with my surname. I was registered on my ****en name, even though I included a marital certificate and an I.D. slip and app**** with my marital surname. I received THREE different case numbers (result of: no communication between Unisa departments). This was never sorted out until I went to the region office. Mr. Freddy Mvhungu helped me to change my surname.

23 January 2017 - I submitted online to change my subjects. I also received an email to confirm this.

Nothing happened. The subjects didn't change on myunisa. I phoned. Lines were always busy (like now). I emailed a lot. No answer.

2 February 2017 - I decided to go to the region office. I was worried because the subjects didn't change. Mr. Mvhungu (Potchefstroom region) helped me that day. He told me that I CANNOT exchange the subjects at that time and that I MUST KEEP the subjects I currently have. He only helped me to cancel linear mathematics to EDT1601. I didn't have a problem to keep them so I started studying and completing assignments. I received very good service from him.

20 February 2017 - I received a confirmation email that I'm registered for the following subjects:
AFK1501
EDT1601
ETH 102L
PST131J
PST104F
PST104E

Mr. Mvhungu helped me to choose some of those subjects on the second of February 2017. Two of them for semester two.

23 February 2017 - Received an email that I am registered for too many models and that BPT11501 and EDA1501 will be registered for the second term.

8 March 2017 - Practical placement confirmation letter received.

10 MARCH 2017 - ALL CANCELED BUT ETH102.

I emailed Ms. Annemarie Nortje (Pretoria department) about these cancelled subjects. It is the third of April 2017 today and the problem is not solved yet.

From the emails I received, I understand that the online department and the physical region office never communicates? How can you run a big organisation like this one like this? I don't think I can be held responsible for this. I went to sort the subject change out. The matter was resolved. Then you cancel all my subjects in MARCH because you didn't keep up with the changes in JANUARY? Every email I received so far is a mess because the different departments doesn't communicate and stay updated with the changes made. How can things be so unorganized?

I emailed everyone I can about this and the only reply I got is that this was changed because I app**** online for this. (Please note the dates).

I feel that this is unacceptable and unprofessional. There is obviously a huge communication problem in your department since we sorted this problem out AFTER the online request.

I've completed and send my assignments before the due date. Obviously it is after the due date now and I'm not registered for those subjects anymore.

This is peoples lives and education and time that is being influenced by the incompetence of the system from Unisa. I have to drive to Potchefstroom on my own account every time to fix the problems Unisa make. I have to take unpaid leave every time. This is unacceptable.

I don't know where I can send a complaint about this so that this can be fixed.

What am I supposed to do now? I expect Unisa to repay my registration fees without deducting my 40%, therefor a FULL payment, so that I can apply again in second semester. Since all of this was Unisa's fault.

I hope I can get some feedback or assistance from Unisa now and that this doesn't happen to your other students.

Esti van Wyk
Student no. ********** 6
