Misplaced exam paper costing me graduation forcing me to pay for another YEAR!
Those close to me know I've been fighting a never-ending battle with UNISA regarding issues with my last exam period.
Tonight, I find myself at an utter low point to discover that not only did I purchase my exam script for nothing but that the University has no intention of ever attempting to resolve my dispute, outside of a slide show which does not even open.
Rendering the many emails and phone calls to the University over the last few months pointless and a utter waste of time
I have resolved myself to the fact that I have spent way to much time and energy fighting with the University.
So, I am posting my final email to the Dean and all the heads of the UNISA's Law College here and closing the chapter, hopefully at the end of this year I can walk away from the University with my degree and finally begin a chapter which the University has needlessly blocked for too long.
************* Dear Messrs,
The above-mentioned matter refers.
I sincerely apologize for the late email on a long weekend. However, I feel this is an important matter to bring to your attention.
I am a final year law student, with one module left on her degree, who after previously failing Legal Philosophy in 2022 due to her own neglect, re-enrolled for the module in the first semester of 2023. I did this with all intention of passing the module in the May/June 2023 exam module. Accordingly, I focused all my time and effort in the allowed time into submitting a perfect Portfolio which I completed to the best of my ability to try and obtain a high mark. I was proud of the 20 page submission and was hopeful at the outcome. Imagine my shock when logging-in to find I'd failed the module again and that I was not the only student facing this outcome.
I, immediately approached the university to ascertain what happened and how I can approach the University for a remark as I strongly disagree with my mark. The University advised me to first purchase the script and on receipt to approach the lecturer for an appointment to discuss the exam, an approach which was suggested not only by the University but by the lecturer, and to further re-enroll for the module as it was made clear that this was both my only resolution and further it could take a long time before I receive my purchased script.
I promptly purchased the script and further re-enrolled for the module. upon receipt of the script, I immediately reached out to the lecturer with the purchased script to schedule a meeting to discuss the exam. Imagine my shock when I was informed by him that no such appointment could be made as they have resolved to only placing slide shows on MyUnisa to maybe, possibly assist students in what went wrong and not adequately approaching the actual issues at hand, dashing my only hope at resolving this and again reassuring me that the only way forward was to proceed in the OCT/NOV 2023 exams with slide shows, which do not open, and study material which the University has provided me and hope this issue doesn't reoccur.
I wish to make it clear at the utter faithlessness this response has placed in my outlook towards the University.
Not only did the University take almost a year to resolve a dispute which I raised on my law of damages module, which included but is not limited to changing my exam date, not informing me, reregistering me, deregistering me, losing my exam script, taking months to mark the script once found, but refused to assist me in correcting the Universities failures in this regard until I proved I was telling the truth, a dispute which was finally resolved in my favor but it has further failed in this regard.
I find the only possible resolution is for the University is to find a new manner to resolve disputes raised on Portfolio Exams then to simply purchase the script and approach the lecturer as this is clearly not a resolution which works, or is adequately responded to on the Universities side and further only provides students with a ever growing faithlessness in the Universities practices and ability to provide adequate support to their students.
I understand the Universities position in that there are thousands of students and only so many lecturers however this is the only dispute resolution which the University offers and as such the University needs to ensure there is an adequate system in place to assist students which wish to make use of it.
I further wish to make clear that I find this continual failure of the University in regards to my studies as highly unprofessional and that this conduct is continuing to impact both my professional goals and that of students who are currently facing the same issues with their studies.
I further would formally like to make it clear that this dispute resolution is not a viable resolution as had I been informed that the University had no intention of honoring its dispute resolution, I would not have purchased the script and would alternatively have elected to make use of other avenues outside of the University.
I have resolved to complete the Oct/Nov 2023 exam as it is clearly the only way forward at this point and further have become utterly exhausted at the continual failures of the University and would like to just complete this final module and proceed in my chosen field, placing the University and its inadequate practices far in the rear view.
I truly hope the University heeds my recommendation, evaluates its ever-failing practices and its approach to the students who place their trust, hopes and dreams in the University. As these failures will only further enforce the already growing distain the students face on a daily basis.
I trust you find the above in order.
