Will Umvuso Health cover members admitted to hospital with Covid-19 related illnesses

I have no bad experience to share as yet, but I have read the reviews of which more than 95% are negative. I was forced by the company I work for, to resign from Momentum Medical Aid and to join Umvuso Health This is my first month with Umvuso Health and I am terrified just by reading the reviews here. I hope it will be smooth sailing for me and my family because members pay their premiums religiously every month and we expect our Medical Aid to be problem-free in the event that we need to use it whether Out of Hospital or as an Inpatient. It is like a life cover - the last thing you want is to have problems with your policy when emotions run high because death has knocked on your door. The same seem to happen when you fall ill. Emotions run high and people can't think straight. This is the time when you need your Medical Aid to speak for you.

I have a question here though - If a member is admitted to hospital for Covid-19 related illness because nowadays every hospital admission seems to be seen as being Covid related even if it is not the case. So Covid-19 is fairly new to us in SA and we have just gone through the 2nd wave of infections. To date I have not received any communication from Umvuso Health stating how they will assist regarding Covid-19 illness or related. Your reluctance to inform members of how far or how close Umvuso Health will stand in the event of Covid-19 illness is scary.

Please contact me via my email address with which I am registered here on hellopeter.

Dear Mr Smouse,

Thank you for your enquiry. We understand that as a new member of Umvuzo Health it is quite alarming to read some of the complaints that have been published on Hellopeter.com
As you may know, very few people go out to publicise good service that they have received, from any service provider, so it comes as no surprise that there would be very few  compliments if any, published at a platform such as this one. Furthermore, even fewer customers go back and give feedback when their issues have been resolved.

As a general guide, Umvuzo Health members have a very pleasant experience provided that they follow the rules of the Scheme and of the option they have selected. For this reason, we have a 24/7/365 call centre for members to call and enquire should they be unsure about their benefits or need to know what processes to follow to access those benefits. The number for this call centre is ***(also available on your membership card).

To answer your question about Covid-19: Covid-19 is regarded as a Prescribed Minimum Benefit, and as such all treatment concerning it. So we cover the Covid-19 test provided you have referred by your GP when you present with symptoms. The test is paid for, regardless of whether the results and positive or negative. Should you test positive for Covid-19, treatment as prescribed by the doctor and in line with all protocol, will be covered accordingly. Should you need to be hospitalised for Covid-19, this will also be funded. Pre-authorisation is required for all hospital admissions. Covid-19 vaccine is also regarded as a PMB, and as such, when available as per the government's rollout plan, the Scheme will pay for the vaccine at cost.

The reason you have not received the formal Scheme communication regarding Covid-19 is most likely because you recently joined Umvuzo Health. The communication department will re-send all communication concerning Covid-19 to the members of the Scheme.

We hope the above does much to settle your fears.

Kind regards,
Umvuzo Health
