Burglary
I am posting this review on the behalf of my elderly parents regarding their stay at Umthunzi hotel and Conference Centre on the weekend of 12-14 February 2021.
Initially was and still a very nice place. We did recommend this place to our family and children. On our last night at the hotel, an intruder got into our room from the balcony through the sliding door while we were asleep. We were on the second floor. This person took our cellphone,wallet,glasses and my gold bangles. Having found out our cellphone was missing we reported this at reception.On reporting this my glasses and wallet was found in the garden by a cleaner and handed in at the reception. There was no CCTV footage overlooking the rooms.There was no sign of patrol at night by security.The security company and the SAPS were informed. Nobody from management came to the room or checked on us. The manager maintained their disclaimer policy and told us that we were responsible for personal property. What about our lives? We were exposed to danger and our privacy was invaded. Management was still not concerned and we did not receive feedback. We had to phone the manager. Visitors please be wary of the hotels security and area. This was our first and last experience at this hotel.
I personally took a call from your Father regarding the incident, and confirmed that I was aware of it, but had not been given the feedback to call him personally – this as an internal matter has been severely dealt with, as it is not the way we do business, and I would have made contact with him first thing Monday morning had I received his wish to be communicated with.
Further to your review, it is a very unfortunate event, having ones privacy breached, and having personal belongings removed from the room, whilst they were sleeping, unfortunately the hotel provides a personal safe in each room for guests to secure their personal belongings, and the room that your parents were in is fitted with a tamper proof, thumb lock, that can only be opened from the inside – and again although very unfortunate, they had left the room unlocked, giving opportunity for the perpetrator to gain entry into the room, that had it been locked, would not have had any luck, or if the valuable belongings had been secured in the personal safe provided, this would also have been in vain.
I have personally followed up with the local police captain, and again as mentioned to your father, the case number provided, unfortunately shows how many incidents of this nature have happened just out of the Port Shepstone Police Station – again not an excuse, but a sign of the times.
I have also reviewed the security footage, as well as patrol reports, and both guards on duty, this has proven that the in fact did do their jobs in question – again an unfortunate incident.
Lastly, when I finished my call with your father – although he was not happy about the situation, he still mentioned what a great hotel we had and it was unfortunate for the situation to be had – but would return, so your final comment I feel is a little far – however again thank you for the feedback, and we will ensure that we do all in our power to ensure that incidents like this are minimized where we have the ability to do so!
