We Paid Into UIF for Years—Why Must We Fight to Get Our Own Money Back?
It is incredibly disappointing and frustrating for unemployed individuals who are already struggling in a difficult economic environment to then have to deal with the inefficiency of the UIF system when trying to access benefits that they have contributed towards throughout their working lives. This is not money we are asking for as a favour—it is money that we earned and contributed to month after month while employed. Yet when we find ourselves unemployed and in need of support, we are forced to beg, borrow, and fight just to access what rightfully belongs to us. I submitted my UIF application in February and have now submitted it three times. It has been almost four months of continuous struggle with no resolution. Every time I contact the call centre, I am told that they cannot see why the application was rejected. The system simply states "rejected" without providing any reason, explanation, or indication of what information may be missing. I am repeatedly told to wait 21 working days, that the matter will be escalated, and that someone will contact me. Yet no one ever does. I have also emailed all the required documentation to UIF, including explanations regarding my surname discrepancy, but I receive no responses and no assistance. There appears to be no accountability, no communication, and no transparency in the process. What is most concerning is that in this day and age, with modern technology available, one would expect a government service such as UIF to have systems that are efficient, transparent, and capable of providing applicants with clear feedback. Instead, the process has become increasingly difficult, stressful, and demoralising. For four months I have been trying to access my own UIF benefits—money that I contributed towards for years—simply to help me survive while I search for employment. The reality is that many of us are already under enormous financial and emotional pressure after losing our jobs. We are trying to support our families, pay our bills, and secure new employment. The last thing we should have to endure is an endless battle with UIF just to receive assistance. What makes this even more concerning is that I am not alone. Several of my former colleagues who were retrenched at the same time are experiencing similar challenges and delays. This suggests that the problem is far broader than a single application. It is deeply disheartening to see how unemployed South Africans are being treated during one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives. Instead of receiving support, we are met with silence, delays, confusion, and administrative obstacles. We are already stressed about finding work and rebuilding our lives, and the UIF process only adds to that burden. Something needs to change. South Africans who have contributed faithfully to UIF deserve a system that is efficient, transparent, responsive, and capable of providing assistance when it is needed most.
