UCT Online High School – Very Disappointing
I am writing to express my concerns regarding the communication and handling of my daughter’s assessments and grading at UCT Online High School. Despite her diligent submission of Cycle Tests, she received a zero in four subjects. During the testing period, she encountered technical difficulties with the software and promptly reached out to her Support Coach and the Technical Team for assistance. We submitted appeals, complete with all relevant information and evidence, yet we have not received any response after over a month of waiting. This lack of accountability and empathy is concerning, particularly in an academic setting that should aim to support its learners rather than penalise them for circumstances beyond their control. The reliability of the systems in place has raised significant concerns, and the responses we have received from the school have felt dismissive. This situation has adversely affected my daughter’s confidence and motivation, despite her putting in substantial effort. It is disheartening to witness a school overlook its technical shortcomings while imposing unfair penalties on students. Given these experiences, I feel compelled to seek a more supportive and professional learning environment for my child. I cannot, in good faith, recommend UCT Online High School to other parents who prioritise fair treatment, academic support, and ethical standards. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Thank you for raising your concerns and affording us the opportunity to engage with you.
The team reviewed the TIA logs for your learners submissions and can confirm that we have a paper for Social Sciences (Geography). This will be uploaded and graded. The reason that this was not graded initially is due to an error where the first session's QR code was used to start the cycle test and the loadshedding slot’s QR was used to submit the paper. This prevented the paper from pulling through to the online campus.
Unfortunately we have no proctoring (invigilation) data for Social Sciences (History), EMS or English - This may be because, either the TIA app was not used or your learner used the mobile version of TIA. The school did communicate that it was introducing increased proctoring through compulsory use of the TIA Desktop app for all Cycle Tests this year - there were several communications regarding this in the lead up to Cycle Tests. This increased invigilation is an important part of the school’s mandate for fair and ethical academic assessment and grading for all learners.
Please will you send your Support Coach any supporting evidence that you have for these papers to your support coach to enable us to investigate and provide you with accurate feedback.

I regret that it has become necessary to utilize the HelloPeter platform to seek clarity on this situation.
With regard to the proctoring data for Social Sciences (History), EMS, and English, we have experienced consistent technical difficulties with the TIA application. Despite numerous attempts to upload the required data, the system repeatedly times out, displaying a "Failed to upload data" error message. Upon consulting UCT technical support regarding this issue, I was merely advised that my daughter's microphone was not activated.
Our assigned support coach has suggested that our internet connection is insufficient; however, we maintain a Fiber connection with 50Mbps download and 30Mbps upload speeds, which should be more than adequate for the task.
Furthermore, despite submitting evidence through the formal appeals process, we have only received an updated report with a minor grade adjustment for Social Sciences, without any accompanying explanation for the decision.
It is of significant concern that my daughter may not pass the term due to what appears to be technical malfunctions rather than her academic capabilities.

We are aligned that HelloPeter is not the ideal platform to resolve academic issues, if you would like to engage directly with us please reach out to your support coach and advise them that your concerns should be taken to the Head of Academics.
With regard to the scripts where you experienced challenges with TIA, do you have any screenshots of the error that you experienced to enable us to investigate this further? Unfortunately when we review these on the backend, there is no proctoring (invigilation) data for these scripts which is why your learner has received a 0.
Our appeals process reviews the information in your appeal, if it is successful then either the script will be regraded or an excusal will be actioned, depending on the type of appeal that you have logged. Once this is complete a new report will be generated, I would encourage you to review the graded script on the Online Campus for assessment specific feedback.
While we understand that this has been a big change, please understand that it is a necessary change to make. The reason this change was made in term 1 is because the weighting for term 1 is the lowest for all terms and has the smallest impact, specifically for instances like this where learners may have utilised the mobile version of TIA which results in a non-submission. We would encourage you to reach out to your support coach with all supporting documents to enable us to investigate thoroughly.

MY MESSAGE TO UCT SUPPORT:
Hi There,
While my daughter was writing her exam today the invigilator app on her laptop kept freezing while running in the background. So it didn’t take any photos or record anything and then it gave us problems at the end of the exam with uploading the data.
Also on her mobile phone the invigilator app keeps losing internet connection and she has full signal and the internet has been stable all day.
I did try calling the support team at the time but the call wouldn’t go through it just kept cutting me off. I just don’t want any of these interruptions affecting her exam results.
So any suggestions would be appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Dale.
REPLY FROM UCT SUPPORT:
Hi
The learner allow mic, camera and video upon installation?
I see the they muted their sound on the PC.

Upon contacting our Support Coach that same day regarding the application's malfunction during the exam and subsequent upload failure, we again received a response that did not resolve the technical problem.
MORGEN’S MESSAGE TO HER SUPPORT COACH:
“Hello ma'am I'm not to sure if I should come to you or go to tech support but through out the whole exam period the invigilator app was crash and kept saying that it was not responding so we just reopend it and it was fine but at the end I had 5 ish mins left and and it just went directly to this page. And I'm not to sure what to do bc it is not uploading.”
SUPPORT COACH REPLY:
“Hi Morgen, You're supposed to upload your script using the invigilator app on your phone.”
Furthermore, I submitted all relevant documentation for the Appeals process, anticipating a detailed explanation regarding the denial decision to gain clarity on the situation.
On May 14th, 2025, I reached out to your support team again, who directed us to the Invigilator App Support Team. However, they were unwilling to assist with our specific issue. Your team then suggested utilising the Invigilator web version, which unfortunately does not resolve the problem with the existing files that cannot be uploaded.
While I understand procedural changes may occur, my daughter and I followed all instructions correctly. The technical failure of the Invigilator PC application has negatively impacted my daughter's academic standing, and it is concerning that UCT has not taken responsibility for the software malfunction that resulted in her failing grade.

The UCT OHS team have investigated this issue thoroughly. The root cause of the issue is that the microphone function was not permitted to record audio in the app during the Cycle Test session which is a requirement for successful invigilation.
This consequently prevented the app from invigilating correctly and blocked the upload submission as the invigilation requirements were not met - the same microphone requirement is app**** to all learners in tests or examinations. Successful invigilation requires that a microphone is permitted for use on the PC or laptop in order to record the test environment audio for any potential conversations or other sources of audio.
Unfortunately the evidence that has been submitted is not sufficient to allow for an excusal. While we understand that this is not the outcome that you hoped for, it is essential that we apply all cycle test and exam regulations consistently for all learners to protect the validity of our assessments for all learners.
We will be releasing a series of communications in the lead up to examinations. Please watch out for these to ensure that your learner does not experience challenges like this in June exams.
