Tygerberg ANIMAL hospital

Last night 15/11/2019 around 20:45pm we got a scare that our Goffin ****atoo might have eaten a piece of chocolate by accident. After a quick google search we found it can be very dangerous and toxic to birds (yes, our own stupidity). We immediately phoned Tah Bellville emergency number to find out what we must do. THEY COULDN'T HELP US AT ALL! (We usually go to Tah Kenridge for check-ups and getting wings clipped etc. But no avian vet there works after hours!!) Eventually after a few minutes we got Animal Zone's Care clinic number and they could help us right away, cleaning my parrot's crop and giving her activated charcoal. He put us at ease that our baby will be fine.

My question is: WHY must we drive all the way to Klapmuts to receive medical attention for my bird? WHY is the name Tygerberg *ANIMAL* hospital if they can't / won't help birds??

Hi Desiree. Our apologies that you felt that TAH Bellville did not want to help your bird - we will investigate the matter and revert back to you. Note that none of our branches, except for Bellville, are open after hours and this has been communicated extensively on our website, buildings, etc.

Dear Desiree. Birds differ completely from other animals and we prefer to refer them to a specialist, especially for non-routine treatment. We have an exotic animal vet, but it is impossible to be available 24-7. Birds are in such cases referred to facilities where they will receive the right care.
