Unreasonable cancellation policy

We booked accommodation and had to cancel (3 weeks before the date) due to unforeseen circumstances. The cancellation policy is 50% will be refunded. We felt that it is a special situation and the owner refused to even speak to us. We requested proof that another guest requested the space and needed to be shown away due to us having booked the site, which they refused.
