A Treurige Lodge
I am writing this out of concern for protecting tourism in Mpumalanga which I know we are very badly needing after the Covid lockdowns and to warn people about the very poor standards of Treur River Lodge. I booked to stay one night on 5 October 2022 and drove a fair distance from Nelspruit looking forward to a small getaway. In spite of the rave reviews that this Lodge seems to have given themselves was extremely disappointed when I arrived there. The "chalets" were small tin roof shack/Wendy house type structures with poor ventilation and zero fans for the Lowveld heat. The chalets are advertised as self catering but there is no fridge, no pots or cooking utensils and no wash up sink. When I tried to switch on the electricity nothing came on. The chalets are next to a very dusty road in order to complete the depressing effect of the place. I also slowly realized that as I was the only guest there that when the restaurant staff went home I would be completely alone in a remote area with no cell phone signal and that after a day of baking in the sun the chalet would be impossible to sleep in without a fan. I eventually got hold of the owner, Melody Ferreira and was struck by her complete disregard for my well being and the fact that I had traveled a long distance to stay at her Lodge. She agreed to refund my money (which she did) but a few minutes after I left started attacking me on whatsapp accusing me of having used the chalet by using the lavatory and lying on the bed (I had put my bag on the bed which wrinkled the blanket). In fact I had not used the chalet as it was unbearably hot and went and sat in the Chubby *** restaurant which she owns.I tried to call her and she then blocked me on whatsapp. I decided to read through the reviews on booking.com and noted that every negative review that guests had given with very legitimate complaints ( no fans, no hot water was repeatedly mentioned, freezing cold in winter, guests being left alone in a remote area which as we know is not safe in South Africa and extreme rudeness from the host) was met by an attack from Melody Ferreira. She accused guests of various things in the same way she has accused me and then proceeded to block them to prevent them from returning. I feel that before making a long trip from Joburg or overseas that people need to be warned about this place. The facilities are bad, you will be ill treated by the hosts and you will be left alone for the night in a remote area. Please don't buy into the fact that this is an "eco lodge" to excuse these poor standards of hospitality.
