Ermelo Traffic officers abuse

Do traffic cops have a right to take someone's phone and beat them up. There's a road block in Ermelo where we were stopped by the Traffic Police. While waiting for the driver whom they took to the police station to pay a fine. They then started harrasing us the passenger's in the taxi. Is that what we pay tax for in South Africa. Do SA police have the right to do as they please to us?
