Toys R Us are misleading Clients by advertising a built 32 inch product but putting a 26 inch product on it.

Yesterday I went to do all my Christmas Shopping for the kids in our family at Toys R Us, Fourways Crossing. Incidentally, my spend was R 7,622.80 by the time I had left the shop, so I think it is fair to say that I am a valuable Customer but I was certainly not treated that way.

Last week my Sister-In-Law took her children to Toys R Us to choose their Christmas gifts. She sent me a photograph of an Airhockey table that was a display item which he was playing with. The price was R399.00 that my nephew wanted. When I got to the store, I went straight to go and purchase that item.

When I got to the display item, it was clearly marked as a 26 inch airhockey table on the big laminated pricing that was stuck to the built airhockey table that was on display. I picked up one of the boxes that were stacked in the middle of the floor next to the airhockey table but I noticed that it was much smaller than the airhockey table displayed.

After much going back and forth and measuring boxes etc... I realised that the airhockey table that had been displayed was the same one that was in the photo my sister-in-law had sent me last week, so the item had been on display for a good while with this pricing on it, however Toys R Us had built and displayed a 32 inch airhockey table which on the tiny shelf pricing cost R 799.00 (there were no prices on any of the actual boxes) but the laminated sticker that was stuck on the airhockey table said it was a 26 inch airhockey table at a cost of R 399.00.

I asked someone to call a Manager and I was told that the Manager was still in a meeting. I said I needed to speak to someone about the pricing on a product and a lady arrived to talk to me.

When I queried the fact that a 32 inch table was on display, next to a whole row of 26 inch boxes, and with a price list of a 26 inch box on it, she insulted me by telling me that CUSTOMERS lie and they take the sticker off the boxes on display and that the CUSTOMERS stick it on the display item (which was clearly presented next to the 26 inch boxes in the middle of the isle). I was EXTREMELY insulted because I did not move the price. I also have photographic evidence that my sister in law took from a week ago where it shows the same 32 inch display item along with the 26 inch pricing. If the Customer had moved the pricing last week, then why did the store not check the pricing during the course of the week and move it back to the correct display boxes? This means that the incorrect pricing had been sitting on the boxes for over a week.

I then asked her why they had built a 32 inch display item and put it right next to all the 26 inch boxes and put the 26 inch pricing? This is false advertising. If I had not seen that the boxes were different sizes, I would have walked out of the shop with a smaller box for the price of R 399.00 thinking I was getting the size of the table that was on display.

The Employee continued to argue with me, not once apologising for their mistake, continuously blaming this on Clients moving the price around, and telling me that there in fine print on the adverti*****t, that's why they put the barcode? Really? So Customers go around checking bar codes when they purchase products? Really?

I asked her, but why has a 32 inch table been built on display instead of a 26 inch table and she tried to tell me that it was because Customers want to see the size of the 32 inch table? She did not have any answer for why they didn't build the 26 inch table instead as that was the table advertised.

I believe that Toys R Us intentionally falsified this adverti*****t by purposefully building a 32 inch air hockey table right next to a display of 26 inch boxes in the centre of the store, and along with a clearly marked 26 inch pricing that has been on the shelf for at least a week as this is the time between when my sister-in-law came into the store.

Toys R Us, you can thank your Employee for insulting me so badly that I will never set foot in your store again. If it wasn't for the children having chosen all of their Christmas presents from that store yesterday, you would be short R 7,622.80 in sales from yesterday as well. My son is 6 years old. He has many many many more birthdays and christmases to get through.

I did not get the assistant's name who very clearly insulted me yesterday and tried to give me ******* answers instead of apologising for the mistake, but she was a coloured lady who certainly needs to take a course in Customer Communications instead of telling the Customer that the Client is always wrong and that it is the clients fault that the pricing was on the 32 inch display item.

I have also forwarded my complaint to the Advertising Complaints Commission because I believe that there will be a lot of disappointed children this month. My mother, who was shopping with me, already put the smaller 26 inch box in the trolley without even realising the difference in sizes.
