Dishonesty in Toys R Us in Canal Walk
Today my husband, my son and myself went to Toys R Us in Canal Walk to get our son a well deserved present. Toys R Us has always been one of our favorites shops. We stared shopping there before the birth of our son. His little baby bed, hi changing table, his baby chair and plenty of toys have been bought there. Every birthday present or Christmas surprise has been bought there and we are very much affectionate to the shop. After checking all toys we picked up a remote controlled car. On the shelf the price was 225R.A very good price we thought, and we went to the counter to pay. The cashier scans the toy and the price is suddenly 399R. I was surprised so I asked the cashier to check the price for me, as on the shelf it was different. She called a man, his name is Jonathan, to go and verify the price. I do wait at the counter for few minutes until he comes back. After several minutes he returns and speak with the cashier in his language (I believe Xhosa). The cashier advised me Jonathan did not find the price I mentioned. As I checked with my husband only 5 minutes before going to the counter I offered to go with Jonathan and show him what I have seen. When we arrive to the shelf the price was gone. The label removed from the shelf. I was very surprised so I asked Jonathan if he removed it. He said no, and immediately tried to convince me buying a different car in another aisle. I was shocked, I looked around but the label with the 225R price was gone. I went back to my husband, at the counter, and advised him about what happened. He was very surprised. We immediately thought the price was removed from Jonathan to avoid possible issues with the manager of the shop. Since our boy really wanted his car we agreed to pay 399R for it. But since we really did not like the feeling of being cheated, we requested to discuss the matter with the manager of the shop. Our cashier called him, and while we were waiting for him to come, my husband heard her chatting with a colleague and in Xhosa she said something like “this is the third time we have this issue today as he messed up all prices”. When the manager comes we told him we really felt treated like stupid as we suspected Jonathan had removed the price and tried to make us look like fools. The manager apologized and then made the really bad comment: “I am not saying you are ***** but since there is no proof of what you are saying there’s nothing I can do for you”. This felt like a punch, did he just mentioned the word ***** to us?! I clearly explained to him the toy was already paid and I was not asking for a discount, but I really did not like being treated that way. I am an honest client and I just wanted clarity. They could have simply advised me the price displayed was incorrect and I was going to be keen with it, but no… very different situation the one we fall into. The manager also mentioned they had other situations along the day and they had to sell the toys at the price displayed on the shelf, even though it was not the correct one. So this made us think, most probably Jonathan is the one appointed to display prices, and since he messed up already a couple of times that day, he thought better make the price disappear and not face again issues and explanations with the manager of the shop, letting customers appear like idiots. Eventually we left the shop, very frustrated and disappointed. A dishonest employee who thought of being cleaver has cheated us, we have paid way more than what we thought and we have also been pointed out as possible ***** by the manager of the shop. What can I say? Will I go back to Toys R Us? Will I still enjoy shopping there? Will I recommend it again to friends? Clearly not. I just hope for all you, not to find Jonathan on your way in future, or he might mess up your day too.
