R900 for a RC drift car and a sad 9 year old.

I recently purchased a radio controlled toy car for my son for Christmas.

The item was purchased on the 22nd of December 2016 from a toy store in Galleria called TOYS IN SA.

I was informed by the sales person, William, that there was a 30 day manufacturer’s warranty on the unit.

We first used the car on the 15th of January 2017. Upon first using it I noticed that it was switching off intermittently. I took it back the store and asked for a refund.

The sales person, Justin, said they don’t do refunds and he would have normally replaced the unit with a new one however they don’t have any in stock.

He mentioned that he could replace the switch as they do repairs in their store as well. I had no choice but to agree and collected the car an hour later with a working power switch.

On Friday the 20th of January 2017 we were using the car and noticed that it was now jerking intermittently and the steering was being locked to one side.

I packed the car and went back to the store hoping to get my money back.

Justin, tested the car in store and it was doing the same thing, jerking intermittently.

I asked to be refunded which he said he could not do as his boss was not available.

He took my details down and said he would get his boss to contact me.

On Monday (23jan2017) I called Justin as he or his boss had not contacted me as yet.

He said his boss was at his gateway branch and would call me in the afternoon.

I sms’d Justin and asked him for his bosses cell number. Justin ignored my SMS. His boss never called.

I called Justin again the following day (24jan2017) , he said he was on leave and gave me his colleague’s number, Daniel.

I called Daniel who mentioned they were testing the car and it was now working fine.

He said he would continue to test it and then call me back. Up till now he has not called.

Ultimately I want to get my money back.

I don’t want the repaired car as I am not sure what they have done to it.

I don’t want a replacement one as they appear to be of cheap quality.

Personally I would advise consumers to stay away from this store and their other branches.

To me it looks like they selling cheap imports at a heavily inflated price and once they have your money you can forget about getting it back.

I am currently in the process of reporting this to the consumer council and taking legal action in an attempt to get my money back.

So to pick up where we left off.

Daniel was testing the car and was supposed to call me back which he never did.

On the 27th of Jan my wife called Justin. Judging from her responses I could pretty much determine that he was giving her attitude.

Eventually she got the owners number from him.

She called the owner, who I have to admit is a very reasonable guy and understanding businessman.

He mentioned that we could go to the store and pick out another car and he would credit us if it was cheaper than the original drift car.

On the 28th of Jan we went to the store where. Daniel was on duty.

He mentioned that there was nothing wrong with drift car that I had returned and the battery just needed to be charged. That didn’t seem to coincide with the behaviour of the car. If the battery was low why was the steering locking in certain direction after a short period of use.

Anyways we didn’t want it back. We opted for the rock crawler @ R650 and we left.

29th of Jan - My son and I open the rock crawler which to our dismay had been previously opened and re-packaged. There were no signs of wear on the vehicle thou.

We connect the battery and……. dead! Stone dead! I charged the battery for a few hours and…. still…. dead.

30 Jan I go to the store again. Justin was on duty. He tested the rock crawler with different battery packs etc. but the result was the same…. dead.

I decided to take an X-Knight @ R600. Justin refused to give me my R50 credit and told me to take something small from the store. I took a bouncy ball @ R40 and discarded the R10.

This time before I left I made sure we test the X-Knight. Justin opened the box which was sealed. Put everything together and this one could turn left and right but could not move forward or backwards.

Frustrated he took another X-Knight this one @ R550. I had to take a R60 mini kite to make up R600 + R10 I had written off.

We tested this one and to my amazement it worked but died shortly after due to low battery. I said I would take it home and charge it.

1feb – took the battery and charger out of the box and the charger is not charging the battery.

So I WhatsApp Kurt the owner who immediately returned my call. He apologise and said he would give me a full cash refund. If only his staff was as customer orientated as him.

So now I go back to the store this afternoon and collect my now R550.

But look at the inconvenience I had to go through:

5 trips to Galleria (fuel + parking)

Calls and SMS’s

So I went to return the X-Knight yesterday (1Feb2017) and finally get my R550 cash refunded. Justin was on duty. I wanted to return the mini kite as well because the only reason I took it was because I had no choice. Justin tells me that he would credit the X-Knight but not the kite. I said for all the inconvenience I have been put through the least he could do was take the kite back as well. He said that for my inconvenience his boss was giving me a drift car free of charge!! It was a demo model, same one that I had originally purchased, but I wasn’t bothered. It was tested and working fine.

Thank you Kurt for that kind gesture.
